From a recent getaway to Rome, a list of some favorite spots outside of the city center.
Rocca di Papa
Hillside small town on the southeast end of Rome, overlooking the entire city as well as Lake Albano and the sea in the backdrop.
Gianicolo and Piazzale Garibaldi
The Pantheon, St. Peter's Basilica, and many more of Rome's best architectural landmarks are all within view. If you happen to be there at noon you will catch the daily cannon launch, a tradition from the 19th century still in effect.
Through a small keyhole in The Knights of Malta gate on Aventine Hill, you can see directly through two rows of the orange orchard, or Parco Savello, to a perfect view of Saint Peter's Basilica.
Civita di Bagnoregio
About 75 miles north of Rome, the town of Civita di Bagnoregio was founded by Estruscans over 2500 yeas ago. The town sits at the top of an isolated hill surrounded by an eroding canyon overlooking the Tiber river valley, only accessible by a footbridge.
Villa Lante is a Mannerist Garden in Bagnaia, in the Viterbo Province of Central Italy (48 Miles north of Rome). The villa features a stunning ceiling mural, terraced gardens with incredible views, and fountains fueled by a 15th century natural aqueduct.
In the Alban Hills 12 miles southeast side of Rome, Frascati is one of the Castelli Romani, historic hill towns, famous for its white wine, and as a cool getaway from the hot summers in Rome.
The small village is home to an ancient Etruscan ampitheater cut from solid Tufo stone, which can seat 7,000 people. The ampitheater was completely filled in and covered with land, discovered accidentally by a farmer.
Gardens of Bomarzo
Also known as Sacro Bosco or the Park of Monsters, the Manieristic gardens created in the 16th century in northern Lazio, are nestled in the valley beneath the castle of Orsini.
A small town on the south-east end of Rome, a great stop to get some of the best spit-roasted and herb-stuffed Porchetta.
Filetti di Baccala
A modest-looking, but famously delicious restaurant specializing in deep fried salted cod. In close proximity to Campo de Fiori square.
A favorite among locals for a great espresso and a huge selection of fresh delicious pastries.
